Are you considering joining the military, but wondering if it’s a good fit for you? There are many good reasons to join the military but it’s not for everyone. In this blog post, I’ll discuss five good reasons for joining!
Joining the military is a huge decision that should not be taken lightly. While there are numerous benefits to joining, it’s not for everyone.
That’s why it’s important to ensure that if you decide to join, it’s for the right reasons. Otherwise, you’re ultimately just wasting both your time and the military’s. Here’s a list of five good reasons to join the military:
1. You’re Patriotic and Have a Desire to Serve Your Country
In my opinion, this is the best reason to join the military. Military service is just that — service! By signing on the dotted line and taking the oath of enlistment, you’re committing to serve your country and support and defend the Constitution of the United States.
Having a love of country and the desire to serve and give back will make your military service more rewarding. It will also give you a true sense of purpose and meaning.
Additionally, it’ll make things easier for you than for someone who just joined for the free college tuition.
2. You Want to Explore Your Career Options
Many people are lost after high school and don’t know what they want to do with their lives. I was one of these people!
There’s also those who’ve already graduated from college and have a career established. But maybe they feel unfulfilled in their career or are looking for something more.
Wherever you’re at in life and your career, there are many good reasons to join the military! You’ll be challenged beyond your limits and get to see what you’re truly capable of. You’ll also get to experience a wide variety of things that most people will never get to do!
These experiences will help you discover what you’re good at and passionate about. And they’ll give you the sought-after skills you need to succeed in the workforce once you leave the military. They’ll also help you discover your strengths and weaknesses!
3. You’re Looking to Grow and Challenge Yourself
If you think the military is going to be a cakewalk, think again! I promise you’ll be pushed to your limit in basic training and beyond.
But it’s only when we’re forced out of our comfort zone and pushed beyond what we think is possible that we can grow and realize our full potential!
One of the often overlooked benefits of serving in the military is that you’ll be challenged mentally, physically, and spiritually beyond your limits. If you’re looking for a serious challenge, you definitely can’t go wrong with the military!
Whether it’s going through the harsh training in basic training, learning how to drive a tank, fly a fighter jet, or putting your training to the test in a real-life combat situation, you’ll discover things about yourself that you never even realized.
4. You Want to Learn New Skills That Will Serve You for the Rest of Your Life
Sure, you can go to college right after high school, learn theory, and listen to often outdated lectures from professors who’ve likely been out of the workforce for years and don’t have much of any real-world experience in the subject they’re teaching.
Once you graduate with thousands of dollars in student loan debt, hopefully you can find an entry-level job in the field that your degree is in.
And then eventually, you can slowly begin climbing the corporate ladder as you gain on-the-job experience over the years.
Alternatively, you can join the military and not only learn numerous job skills at an expedited pace and in a wide variety of fields, but you’ll also learn real-world skills and gain experience in areas that you just can’t get anywhere else and that can be applied to all areas of your life!
Things like discipline, personal responsibility, loyalty, and handling difficult situations under extreme pressure and stress are just a few examples of things that you’ll learn in the military but can’t learn in a college classroom.
I’m not dissing college or saying it’s a bad thing. What I’m suggesting is that you’ll learn a lot more and faster with hands-on, real-world experience. And the military is perfect for this! It will prepare you for virtually anything that life throws at you.
Trust me, the things you’ll learn and the experiences you’ll gain while serving are priceless, invaluable, and will serve you for the rest of your life! As an added bonus, you can still go to college if you want, during or after your military service. And Uncle Sam will pay for it!
5. You Want to Travel the World and Experience Other Countries and Cultures
A lot of people dream of traveling the world, but can’t afford to or are too busy with their career, family, and life in general. So they put it off indefinitely or wait until retirement.
But what if you had the opportunity to travel the world and get paid for it? Well, you can!
It won’t exactly be a vacation since you’re there to do a job. But you’d still be hard-pressed to find another opportunity to travel the world on Uncle Sam’s dime! And in most cases, you’ll have the opportunity to sightsee and immerse yourself in the culture of your host country.
It’s hard to explain, but I can tell you from personal experience that getting to visit other countries and experience other cultures is eye-opening, exciting, and fun! And it’s just another benefit of serving in the military.
These are just a few good reasons to join the military.
Obviously, this list is non-exhaustive, and there are many other good, admirable reasons for wanting to serve.
